Academics

Academic standards in 12 subject areas have been adopted by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. Academic standards are benchmark criteria that describe what children should know and be able to do starting in third grade. The regulations, which are based on the standards, have been officially enacted by the state legislature. As such, they must serve as the foundation for curriculum and instruction in public schools throughout Pennsylvania. The Board's Chapter 4 regulations, contain state requirements for curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Pennsylvania's Standards Aligned System (SAS)

The Standards Aligned System (SAS), developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is a comprehensive, researched-based resource to improve student achievement. SAS identifies six elements that impact student achievement: Standards, Assessments, Curriculum Framework, Instruction, Materials & Resources, and Safe and Supportive Schools. Schools and educators across Pennsylvania are supported in their efforts to implement SAS by the development of a state-of-the-art portal.
