Building Confidence Early: How Penn Hills Prepares Kindergarteners for School Success
Brian Brown

The first day of school can be nerve wracking for students of all ages, but especially those walking through the halls for the very first time; Kindergarteners. That’s why Penn Hills School District prioritizes Kindergarten readiness early on during the summer months to not only prepare the students, but also ease their minds when it comes to entering a new environment.

“Kindergarten readiness events are such an important way for us to support our families, and their children as they prepare for this exciting new chapter. Starting school is a big milestone, and we want every child to feel confident, comfortable, and ready for the first day,” Chris Cence, Principal of Penn Hills Elementary School, said.

Over the past several months, through a series of creative and engaging readiness events, the district is helping incoming kindergarteners and their families ease into this big transition.

“These events give our youngest learners a chance to explore their new school, meet some of the wonderful adults who will be teaching them, and even start making new friends. Families also get the opportunity to learn more about what kindergarten looks like, ask questions, and connect with our staff and other parents. It’s a great way to begin building a strong partnership between the school and family, which plays an important role in helping students become successful,” Cence said.

One of the standout events has been “Kinder Storytimes,” where children gather at the Penn Hills Library to hear read-alouds from teachers and staff. These sessions not only introduce kids to classroom routines and listening skills but also provide an early exposure to literacy in a fun, low-pressure setting.

Another popular event was “Kinder Readiness with Pete the Cat.” It brought the beloved children’s book character to life through themed activities and games. The event blended play with learning to help children build comfort in the school setting while developing key readiness skills like following directions, working in groups, and expressing themselves.

“Kindergarten readiness events make a big difference in helping both students and their families feel more prepared and at ease as they get ready for school. For our young learners, these events offer a chance to visit the school, meet teachers, and begin to feel comfortable in their new environment,” Cence said. “For families, the events provide valuable information about what to expect in kindergarten. They can ask questions, meet school staff, and connect with other parents who are going through the same experience.”

To wrap up the summer series, the district hosts “Popsicles on the Playground,” a relaxed, fun-filled event where children and their families enjoy a cool treat, explore the playground, and meet future classmates and teachers in an informal setting.

While these events are primarily meant to support the students, parents have also been active participants in the process. By attending events alongside their children, families gain insights into what to expect in the coming school year and how to support learning at home. These experiences also help build trust and open communication between families and school staff.

“Families consistently share positive feedback about our kindergarten readiness events. Parents often tell us how valuable it is to explore the school alongside their child, meet the staff and other families, and get a real sense of what kindergarten will be like. These experiences go a long way in making the transition feel more comfortable, less overwhelming, and more exciting for both children and their families,” Cence said.

As the district looks ahead to the upcoming school year, staff say they’re already seeing the benefits of early engagement. Students are arriving with more confidence, and parents are feeling more prepared for the transition.

“One of the most exciting parts of being a principal is welcoming a new group of kindergarteners each year,” Cence said. “There’s nothing quite like seeing their bright smiles, curiosity, and eagerness to explore as they begin their school journey. It brings so much energy and joy to PHES!”
