Kindergarten Students Bring Flat Shapes to Life with Gingerbread House Project
Brian Brown

Kindergarten students spent the month of December exploring their math unit, “Flat Shapes Around Us,” through a hands-on and creative classroom project. Using their knowledge of flat shapes, students designed templates for gingerbread houses, carefully traced shapes, and cut them out of cardboard.

As they began assembling their houses, students encountered the challenge of how to attach the roof. A student from Mrs. Kriss' class figured out that they could use a rod to balance the roof on top. This moment highlighted not only their growing understanding of shapes, but also their ability to think critically. Each class used their own creativity to decorate their houses.

Working in teams, students assembled their gingerbread houses and decorated the exteriors, bringing their mathematical learning to life in a fun and festive way. The project encouraged creativity, and collaboration while reinforcing key math concepts, making learning both meaningful and memorable for our youngest learners.
