The 2024-2025 school year was one to remember for Mr. Gabrielson's coding and gaming classes at Penn Hills High School. This year, students showcased their skills in innovative and inspiring ways, from national recognition to local creativity.

First, Penn Hills students won four coding competitions hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, earning them the title of the most successful high school in the nation for the challenge they participated in. Their dedication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities impressed everyone, with Mr. Gabrielson stating that he couldn't be prouder.

In February, students brought tech into tradition by competing in the school's annual Black History Month Door Decorating Contest. Their entry honored Jerry Lawson, a pioneering African American computer engineer. The door featured LED lights programmed with tiny computers to light up Lawson's eyes. The unique fusion of coding and art earned them a winning spot in the contest.

Penn Hills High School also hosted its third annual Hackathon in collaboration with Elizabeth Forward High School. Students spent the day designing their own video games, showcasing teamwork, innovation, and imagination.

On the competitive gaming side, the Penn Hills Esports Team made it all the way to the State Championship in Overwatch 2. Their skill and sportsmanship were on full display as they proudly represented our school.

The Penn Hills Game Club also kept things lively after school with dozens of gaming meetups - some stretching late into the evening. The club provides a fun, welcoming space for students to relax, connect, and share their passions for games. With many of the club's members graduating, new members are encouraged to join next year to help keep the momentum going.

"If your child took part in any of these activities, thank you for supporting their interest in coding, gaming, and technology," said Mr. Gabrielson. "I'm excited to see many of our students return next year and look forward to welcoming some new faces as well!"
