Penn Hills, PA — August 21, 2025— Penn Hills High School is proud to announce its feature in a new video produced by the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Robotics Academy, highlighting the transformative power of robotics, hands-on learning, and pre-apprenticeship pathways for high school students. The video showcases both Penn Hills High School and Quaker Valley High School as models of how schools are preparing learners for Industry 4.0 and the future of work.

The video also features Penn Hills High School Robotics Teacher, Barry Plowman, who has played a pivotal role in inspiring students to explore engineering, automation, and robotics. Under his leadership, students at Penn Hills are engaging in project-based learning experiences that connect classroom knowledge to real-world industry needs.

At Penn Hills, robotics education is more than a class; it’s a pathway to opportunity. Through the PHorge Academy Robotics Program, students are immersed in real-world problem-solving, advanced manufacturing concepts, and cutting-edge technology that align with modern industry demands. By connecting students to state-recognized pre-apprenticeship programs, the district is ensuring learners graduate with both the technical skills and professional experiences necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.

“Being featured by Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Academy is an incredible honor and recognition of the innovative direction we’re taking at Penn Hills,” said Dr. John Mozzocio, Superintendent at Penn Hills School District. “Our Robotics Academy is built to give students authentic experiences in automation, engineering, and design; skills that directly connect to Industry 4.0 careers. This is about preparing our learners not just for jobs, but for leadership in a rapidly evolving world.”

The PHorge Academy Robotics Program reflects Penn Hills School District’s broader mission to create future-ready learning environments where students engage with robotics, health care, information technology, and entrepreneurship. Robotics, specifically by integrating hands-on projects with pre-apprenticeship certification opportunities, Penn Hills is bridging the gap between high school classrooms and high-demand industries.

The video, produced by the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy, emphasizes the importance of robotics in cultivating critical thinking, creativity, and workforce readiness. Penn Hills is proud to be recognized on this platform and to see its teachers and students highlighted for their innovation and dedication.
